Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can support a woman as she prepares for childbirth.

I understand that being pregnant can be one of the most exciting times for a woman, but also daunting at the same time. So many things to consider in just 9 months. The good news for pregnant woman is that a lot can be done to support a woman as she prepares for childbirth.

The theoretical and clinical framework of the care of pregnant women is that pelvic subluxation (misalignments of the sacrum and ilium) and improper function of associated muscles, may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e. dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, baby mal-presentation and maternal emotions. The correction of pelvic subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.

When there was an imbalance of the sacrum (bone that lies at pelvic center), it affects the ligaments and muscles that suspended the uterus. As the baby grows and develops, this misalignment of the pelvis and uterus can affect the child in the final trimester (positioning, head shape) and it will also change how the uterus contracts during labor making delivery more difficult. The techniques that I use are specifically designed to align the bones, ligaments and muscles of the pelvis helping the whole experience become less stressful.

Supporting a woman with a decision to become pregnant can be grouped into 3 main areas:
1. Preconception care
2.Pregnancy care
3. Post-natal care

Why should I have Chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Not only is it safe to visit a Chiropractor during your pregnancy, it’s also highly beneficial. Getting regularly adjusted while pregnant is a great way to relieve the added stress on your spine that comes along with the weight gain. It can also prevent sciatica, the inflammation of the sciatic nerve that runs from your lower back down through your legs and to your feet. It’s also important to maintain pelvic balance, which is oftentimes thrown off as your belly grows and your posture changes.

Besides making you feel better during pregnancy, getting regular Chiropractic adjustments can also help control nausea, prevent a potential C-section, and has even been linked to reducing the amount of time some women spend in labor.

What are the benefits of Chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can provide benefits for women who are pregnant. Potential benefits of Chiropractic care during pregnancy include:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Reducing the time of labor and delivery
  • Relieving back, neck or joint pain
  • Preventing a potential caesarean delivery

Labor and Birth

Dr. Joan Fallon found that first-time mothers averaged a 24% shorter labor, while experienced mothers (those who had given birth before) had a 39% reduction in the average labor time in a substantial percentage of births.

In another hospital study that incorporated Chiropractic adjustments during the patient’s pregnancy, the results indicated that there was a 50% decrease in the need for painkillers during delivery, attributable to pre-delivery adjustments.

Treating pregnant women throughout their pregnancy can be very rewarding; especially with many of the trials and tribulations that a woman may feel over the 40 weeks. For many women, they may be unaware of the benefit which Chiropractic care may have with conditions such as heartburn, back pain, sore muscles, restlessness, pubic pain and constipation.

To sum it up, the less stress that a woman feels within her body while carrying her child, the better she will feel, while also preparing her for a good labor. This can help a woman feel more mobile, have more energy and enjoy the experience as she prepares for motherhood.

In a study conducted by Dr. Irvin Henderson MD (a member of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees) demonstrated that “women who received Chiropractic adjustments in their third trimester were able to carry and deliver their child with much more comfort.”
